English.in.Quito offers preparation courses for IELTS or Cambridge English First (FCE) specially tailored to L2(*) English school teachers working in public and private education who need a Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) B2 to C1/C2 qualification to enhance their professional career opportunities. Altenatively, English school teachers can prepare for the Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT).

Cambridge English First (FCE)’s Grade A is equivalent to CEFR C1 and its Grades B and C correspond to CEFR B2. The TKT tests a person's teaching knowledge, not their proficiency; the language used in the TKT course is equivalent to CEFR B1.

* Provide a practical conversation-based focus throughout each course to get teacher-students talking to help them practice and improve their listening and speaking skills, and to
strengthen their spoken vocabulary and grammar. This is the basis of an integrated skills approach that includes developing reading and writing skills required for IELTS, FCE and TKT.
* Encourage teacher-students to participate in the courses by exchanging experiences and ideas about English teaching and learning methods and strategies to improve effective English communication among themselves and their students in and outside the classroom.
* Use approved teaching-learning resources such as course books, audio recordings, and videos by recognised publishers such Cambridge, Oxford, Pearson, Macmillan, etc.
* Encourage study and practice outside the classroom by
providing links to online dictionaries and other resources for listening, reading, vocabulary and grammar tasks at home.
* Provide personal online support through Skype to those who need advice and tutoring.
* Offer a flexible approach to teachers’ busy schedules. Each course is planned and agreed with the participants according to their work and other commitments. Groups and individual students can choose the length of the course and the number of lessons and hours you require according to your language level and schedule. Courses can be provided at the students’ work or other location of their choice within Quito. One-to-one lessons are usually given in a small classroom in La Floresta, Quito.
* Charge moderate fees are charged according to the number of students in a course, the number of hours a month booked, and the location of the course. There are no ‘added costs’ and materials (books, photocopies, etc.) are charged at cost price.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the most popular English test in the world, accepted by over 9,000 organisations, including academic and government institutions and businesses, including the vast majority of education providers in the UK, Australia, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand; by over 3,000 educational institutions in the US; and by many universities and business in non-English speaking countries.
Using a 1 to 9 band (non-user to expert) system IELTS measures the language proficiency of people who want to study or work in environments where English is used as a language of communication. IELTS band scores map onto the CEFR levels. An IELTS 6.5/7.0+ band score helps teacher-students to prepare and study for English teaching qualifications such as the Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA).
Cambridge English: First (FCE, formerly First Certificate) is an internationally established qualification recognized by over 15,000 institutions and employers around the world.
FCE is the logical step up from Cambridge Preliminary to Upper Intermediate and Advanced English levels. As part of the five-level Cambridge English exam system.
FCE is targeted at CEFR B2 and C1 levels, equivalent to IELTS bands 5.0/5.5 to 7.0; the FCE Grade A is equivalent to CEFR C1.
The approach to preparing for FCE is based on the same teaching-learning principles as Cambridge English’s other exams and so will help English school teachers to better develop their students’ listening and speaking skills.
There is a wide range of online resources for teaching and studying for FCE, many of which are free and published by Cambridge English.
The Teaching Knowledge Test is an alternative qualification for teaching English but it does not qualify within the CEFR B2 to C1/C2 levels. However, TKT is a highly respected qualification from Cambridge English and is recognised in over 60 countries designed to help English teachers in their professional development and their progression on the Cambridge English Teaching Framework. TKT is accessible and flexible: the language used in the TKT course is at CEFR B1 (intermediate) level English; students can take one or all three of TKT’s modules in any order over any time period:
Module 1: Language and background to language learning and teaching.
Module 2: Lesson planning and use of resources for language teaching.
Module 3: Managing the teaching and learning process, including classroom management.
A Cambridge English certificate is given for each module.
